Covered terraces and porches

Motorized patio screens in Winnetka

Enjoy the garden view with more control over the space around you. EDG designs retractable exterior screens for existing covered terraces, porches, and pergolas, balancing insects, side glare, and privacy one opening at a time.

Keep the view part of the design

Every side can have a different job

Winnetka's tree-lined setting is a reason to think carefully about what a screen frames. A shaded garden edge and an exposed afternoon seating area need not use the same fabric or move at the same time. We help you choose a layout that feels useful with the screens both raised and lowered.

The garden-facing opening

Begin with the view you want to keep. EDG compares mesh openness and color from your seating position, including how the lowered screen changes the view from inside the house. Raise that screen when shade or bug protection is not needed.

The side that catches low sun

Overhead cover does not stop sunlight entering below the roof. Solar fabric can address glare at the table or lounge without requiring every screen to be down. We choose the material around the time of day you use that part of the terrace.

The opening toward a neighbor

Privacy can be concentrated on one side while another stays open. EDG compares privacy-oriented fabrics with your view and daylight goals. The right choice also depends on the lighting when you use the space.

Existing roof, thoughtful upgrade

Make the opening ready for the screen

A good retrofit starts behind the finish. EDG checks the supporting beam, side posts, opening shape, and anchoring surfaces. We allow room for the housing, a clear track path, the bottom bar, and doors that still need to swing or slide.

The power route is planned before the system is ordered, including any electrician coordination. If you want a motorized roof as well, we coordinate the structure and screens together through our Winnetka louvered pergola service.

Review the property along with the design

EDG confirms the building and electrical review needed for the proposed work with Winnetka's Community Development team. For a lakefront address, we also check the Village's lakefront regulations before finalizing the layout.

Start with the Village's permit information or its lakefront review resources.

For everyday use, EDG explains the selected screen's wind limits, seasonal operation, and care. Mesh adds side comfort; it does not make the terrace an insulated indoor room.

Design and local installation with EDG

  1. 01

    Walk the terrace with you

We discuss seating, dining, access to the garden, and where bugs or glare interrupt your time outside. Then we measure each opening and review the roof or pergola that will support the screens.

  2. 02

    Coordinate the visible details

EDG plans housings above the openings, tracks along posts or walls, finishes, and power routes as one design. Concealed details are considered where the existing construction supports them, with access kept for future service.

  3. 03

Install and set up the controls

Our local installation team fits the selected system and sets up the agreed control groups. We show you screen movement, everyday use, seasonal care, and how to contact EDG if the system needs attention.

Winnetka patio-screen questions

Can I screen just the sunny side of my Winnetka patio?

Yes, a suitable covered opening can be screened on its own to address side glare or a particular sightline. If keeping insects out of the whole patio is the goal, we also review the remaining openings and access points so the perimeter can close effectively.

Will a privacy screen block my garden view?

The view changes with fabric openness, color, and the light on either side. Denser fabric generally trades more visibility and daylight for more screening. EDG compares samples around your seating and indoor sightlines so you can decide which balance you prefer.

Can screens on several openings move independently?

Depending on the selected system, controls can operate individual screens or groups of screens. EDG plans those groups around the terrace: lower the sunny side while leaving garden access open, or close the screened perimeter together when insect control matters.

What changes the installation cost for a covered terrace?

The number and dimensions of the openings, fabric, housing and track details, structural attachment, power route, and controls shape the quote. Recessing components into a finished ceiling or working around masonry can add scope. EDG reviews these details before final pricing.
