Pergola roof choices

A roof that tilts—or a roof that opens to the sky.

Both give you control over shade. The difference is what happens when you want the roof out of the way. EDG helps choose the movement that suits your patio, your view, and the daylight inside your home.

Two different ways to open a pergola roof

“Open” can mean angled blades or a roof that slides back. Decide which experience you want before comparing finishes and accessories.

Tilting louvers

The blades rotate while staying in their positions across the roof.

Adjust shade and ventilation through the day. When open, the blades still remain overhead, so you see the sky between them.

A strong starting point when your main goal is adjustable shade over a dining or lounge area and you like the rhythm of the roof above you.

Retractable louvered roof

On a tilt-and-slide system, the blades rotate and also move together toward one side.

Expose more of the sky and bring more daylight to the patio when the roof is retracted. The frame and a stack of louvers remain.

Worth comparing when open sky is part of the experience or a roof beside the house could shade nearby windows more than you want.

Plan the roof around the whole patio

Where the roof opens

The retracted blades need a place to gather. EDG plans the stacking end around windows, the view from the house, seating, and the direction you want to see the sky. We also compare the usable opening with the overall frame dimensions.

Daylight beside the house

A covered patio can change the light in the room behind it. EDG reviews the orientation, door and window positions, roof height, and how you use the patio in different seasons. Retraction can be especially useful when you want shade at lunch and a more open outlook later.

Rain and side protection

With either roof, closed-roof drainage needs a complete path through gutters, posts, and the site. Wind-driven rain can enter from open sides. Screens or glass can add side protection; EDG plans those openings and controls with the roof so they work as one outdoor room.

Structure, controls, and care

Dimensions, supports, power, sensors, service access, and local wind and snow conditions shape the selected system. EDG coordinates design, permitting, installation, and operating guidance for the project rather than applying one model’s weather limits to every pergola.

Common roof comparison questions

Does a louvered pergola roof always retract?

No. Many motorized louvered roofs tilt their blades in place. A retractable louvered roof also moves the blades together toward one side. EDG shows you the roof movement before you choose a system.

Does a retractable roof disappear completely?

No. The perimeter frame and a stack of roof blades remain. The amount of open sky and the position of the stack depend on the system and dimensions. EDG plans both into the layout.

Which roof is better next to patio doors or windows?

A retractable roof is worth considering when daylight into the house and an open view overhead are priorities. Tilting louvers can be a good fit when adjustable shade and ventilation are the main goals. The orientation, height, and location of the roof help determine the better choice.

Can either roof be combined with retractable screens or glass?

Yes, with a compatible system and coordinated design. Screen housings, side tracks, glass openings, drainage, and electrical routing should be planned with the structure. EDG helps select the roof and side protection together.

How do I compare the cost of the two roof types?

Compare quotes for the same footprint and scope, including supports, drainage, electrical work, controls, screens or glass, and installation. Retraction adds a roof movement mechanism, but the final project price also depends on the system, size, and site. EDG can help compare suitable options.
